提款机的英文缩写：ATM

ATM 这个缩写的全称是 automatic teller machine。

它的正确翻译并不是“自动取款机”，而是“自动出纳机”。

automatic 是“自动的”，machine 是“机器”，这些都比较好理解。

容易让人不解的是中间的 teller，它指的是银行的“柜员”，也就是给你办业务的人。可以看得出来，它是由 tell（告诉）变化而来的。

但为什么银行的柜员要叫 teller 呢

这是因为，这个职位的人是负责数钱、计算、看账目的，你的账户上有多少钱得由他们 tell（告诉） 你，交易中的种种对错也得由他们来 tell（分辨），于是他们就被称作了 bank teller
